This one is special.

The gated entry leads to the 250-pound mahogany front door. It pivots open and you begin to “get” this extraordinary home. First, look up at the glass panes and wood soffit above, connecting the exterior with the interior. Take in the labor intensive, substantial concrete wall, designed to look like fine-grained wood. It’s referred to as the ”spine” of the home. These first impressions set up the vibe of the house: large and perfectly scaled spaces synthesizing the exterior with the interior, like no other.

It is this sublime fusion of materials, light, and seamless spaces that drove the team of experts and the family within to create this two story absolute work of art. Art, yes, but at the same time, it is thoroughly comfortable, playful, and warm. The use of zinc on the entire exterior renders this house a sculpture of modern art. But, “modern art” in this context was intended for a family of 5 to maximize every inch of this 14,000 square foot lot to embody what family life means to them today:

♦ Informal spaces to congregate, entertain, and enjoy life together, blending inside with outside. This meticulous and thoughtful construction and design veers from the norm — the magic is in the details.

♦ Radiant heated concrete floors take you to the two-storied ceiling dining room featuring: designer John Pomp’s custom “Infinity Cluster” chandelier with about 20 mini pendants, a sleek, floating walnut console and an 11’ dining table. The kitchen features an enormous island of Basaltina (Walker Zanger’s rare, dense volcanic limestone) perfect for communal gatherings, spotlighting 3 showcase glass pendants with a rose gold color veneer. The cabinets are sycamore, walnut and rift oak and there is a “steamer oven” wall unit. The pantry is a separate room. The great room has a wood and concrete fireplace and a cool surround sound hidden speaker system built in to the ceiling.

♦ The mudroom is a fun place to stash your backpacks, boots, and skateboards.

♦ There are 4 bedrooms, each with its own thermostat, en-suite bathroom with heated floors, and walk in closet with automatic light sensors.

♦ The appropriately named “Jewel Box” powder room with 3 floor to ceiling Walker Zanger glass tile walls has its own surprise at night – the dancing shadows of the exterior plants performing behind a glazed glass wall.

♦ The floating walnut staircase takes you to the landing accommodating a floor-to-ceiling built-in book/art case, a piano, and reading chairs.

♦The office pavilion featured above has a separate entrance, a wall of sliding glass doors and is within eyesight of the main living areas: outdoors and in.

♦The master suite has radiant heating throughout and showcases the most distinguishing characteristic of the home – a stunning glass and steel bridge connecting the bedroom to the bathroom. The lower levels of the glazed Mondrian-like windows are opaque, but, the eye level windows are clear allowing a view out and natural light coming in. The master glass sliding doors are covered with textured electric shades on timers working with the homes smart system, which rise and close daily as you set the program that fits your schedule. (Smart system also controls zoning for dimmer lighting, music, heat, air conditioning, etc. throughout the house.)

♦ On the first level, 4 sets of custom sliding glass walls open to, really, a personal resort. On the outdoor concrete pads, there are two separate living areas with two custom built-in fire pits, a dining area with built-in BBQ, a BAJA ledge entry swimming pool, and a sand volleyball court.

♦ The white interior walls are unique in that they actually don’t hit the floor, but seem to float. This shadow-reveal at the base creates a clean line effect.

♦ The minimal landscaping plays a supporting role to the home and was designed to be drought resistant. The masterfully placed outdoor lighting creates the sparkly magic twinkle this home possesses, especially at night.

♦ The entire home is run off of solar power.

♦ There is an electric car charging station in the 3-car garage.
Put all of this, plus more, in one amazing home and you sense the magic from the inside out or the outside in.
